Company Profile:

NanoString Technologies is a start-up company based in Seattle, WA that has pioneered a complete system that enables automated, digital, multiplex gene expression analysis. The NanoString technology was invented at the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) in the laboratory of Dr. Leroy Hood in 2000. The company was spun out of the ISB in 2003 when the technology was exclusively licensed to NanoString Technologies. NanoString Technologies has raised more than $17million from OVP Venture Partners of Kirkland, WA and Draper Fisher Jurvetson of Menlo Park, CA. Chad Waite of OVP and Jennifer Fonstad of DFJ both sit on the board of directors of NanoString along with Perry Fell, NanoString's CEO. After a successful Early Access program to place a limited number of systems during the first half of 2008, NanoString recently announced the launch and broad availability of the commercial nCounter Analysis System.

Key Products:

NanoString technology enables identification and quantification of individual target molecules in a biological sample by attaching a tag to each target molecule. This approach is similar to the concept of measuring inventory by scanning barcodes. Reporters can be made with hundreds or even thousands of different codes allowing for highly multiplexed analysis.

NanoString's core technology is based on the creation of many different unique "tags" which are individually attached to different target specific molecules. These unique molecular tags provide a mechanism for identifying many different individual molecules in a complex biological sample. Unique tags are created through a combination of different colors and different positions. Additional codes may be created by simply increasing the number of colors or positions on the tag. This high level of multiplexing enables many biological applications that rely on simultaneous measurement of molecules of interest.

NanoString's nCounterTM Analysis System includes everything to perform multiplexed gene expression analysis. We supply two instruments to complete the analysis, the nCounter Prep Station for sample processing and the nCounter Digital Analyzer for detection and results reporting as well as the nCounter Custom CodeSet (assays), reagents, consumables, and controls.
